Pug HealthCare Tips

Here are some general tips on how to keep your pug clean, healthy, and happy:

                >Bathe them regularly.  Pugs are prone to sensitive skin, so we use baby shampoo and bathe our pug every week.

                >Brush their teeth once to twice every week.  In some pugs it is difficult to get to their teeth, but it is very important to keep your pug’s teeth clean.  If you neglect your pug’s dental care it can lead to abscessed teeth and gum disease.  It is better to take care of something now to prevent something happening in the future.

                >The folds of their face must be cleaned on a regular basis.  The folds of skin on their face get food and other stuff stuck in it and must be cleaned.  If left uncleaned, it can lead to an infection that must be treated with topical medication.

                >Their ears must be cleaned on a regular basis with a gentle cleansing solution.  If you notice more earwax or the wax is a brownish color, along with your pug scratching the ear or an odor, take your pug to the vet.

               >Make sure to clean their anal glands on a regular basis.  It is easy to do, although it is rather gross.  If left alone, it can lead to an impaction of the anal glands or even an infection.  The anal glands are very easy to find.  If you place your thumb and forefinger on the sides of your pug’s anus you will feel two ball-like objects.  These are the anal glands.  Gently apply pressure to these glands until the brownish fluid is released.  Afterwards, wash the area with soap and it will take care of the smell and the uncomfortable feeling for your pug.

                >Make sure to clip your pug’s toenails regularly.

                 >Pugs have a lot of eye discharge (eye boogars) that must be cleaned away.  Use a piece of Kleenex or toilet paper to gently wipe them away.  If you notice an increased amount of discharge or the discharge turns yellow, call your vet.
